The latest alarmist news from the BBC indicates that the UK will run out of oil, coal and gas within 5 years. I’m not sure where this information has come from, or what criteria they are using to evaluate this, but it does highlight the fact that all fossil fuels are a finite source of energy and we need to embrace renewable energy, whether it is wind, tidal, hydro or solar, to be able to sustain our current energy consumption.

It seems the government don’t agree with this stance and in the last few days they have unveiled proposals to limit subsidies paid to large solar farms and onshore wind farms, this is being done while subsidies are growing for fossil fuels. Ministers are hoping that enough shale gas – extracted by fracking – will be obtained to make a difference, the BBC’s environment analyst Roger Harrabin says. They are also offering incentives for more oil research in the North Sea – and trying to persuade the USA to export more gas, he added.
